From birth to a week old the puppies will be monitored constantly. We make 2 nests for the mom to choose from. When the time comes, if she is showing signs of wanting her nest somewhere else, we help sanitize the area and give her everything she needs to build her nest elsewhere. We make sure to keep mom healthy, spoiled, and comfortable throughout the process.
Once the litter is born, or while they are being born (depending on how labor is going and how she is feeling) we will send pictures and updates of whose being born and how labor is going to anyone on our waitlist.
During week 1- If we have to leave the house or she wants privacy, we have 24/7 surveillance with cameras around her whelping box. If allowed, we try to have her and the puppies in our room with us for the first week, so we can be there to help as quickly as possible if an issue arises in the middle of the night. We don't sleep much during this time.
After extensive research, we personally have chosen not to dock tails, and remove dewclaws, unless requested. If this is something you would like, please let us know. This decision needs to be made immediately so we have time to schedule an appointment in time. The procedure needs to take place by day 5. If you would like help deciding, I would be happy to give advice on the positives and negatives of both options. Please feel free to reach out.
The puppies stay in their whelping box during this time. They open their eyes around day 10-14. We use a heat lamp in one corner of the box, and a heated mat under half of the box, to make sure they stay warm at all times. We make sure to keep their area around 80-85 degrees. They are still being closely monitored at this age. The puppies will receive their 1st dewormer at 2-3 weeks of age. They begin sensory training once their eyes have opened.
The puppies are walking and beginning to play. They are now zoned to the middle of our home so that they can be well socialized and supervised. We start potty training and deworm the puppies again at 4-5 weeks. They are also beginning reaction training in addition to their sensory training. At 4-5 weeks they are being weaned from mom and starting to eat solid food.
The puppies will be dewormed again at 6 and 8 weeks, or at 7 weeks if their previous deworming took place at 5 weeks. They are preparing for their new homes. We begin to do individual training and separating to get them use to being alone. They will go to the vet for a checkup, and shots, before going to their new homes.
You will get to bring home your new best friend. I will send home lots of goodies to get you started, and I will be here for lifetime support. Never hesitate to ask.
